Nursing Home Owner Arrested Following Fatal Delivery

Berhampur: Authorities in Odisha's Ganjam district have taken into custody the owner of a nursing home following a tragic incident where both a mother and her newborn died during childbirth. The arrest occurred on Sunday after it was revealed that the delivery was performed without any qualified medical personnel present.

The accused, identified as Mangulu Charan Pradhan, aged 35, along with two auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs), conducted the delivery on May 11 without the supervision of a registered medical practitioner, according to police reports.

Inspector Prasant Kumar Patra from Digapahandi police station stated that Pradhan was apprehended in his village after a complaint was lodged by the husband of the deceased, Babu Nayak, from Korakhandi.

The two ANMs involved, Madhusmita Pattanayak and Pramodini Gamango, were arrested on May 19 and August 10, respectively, for their roles in the incident.

Police indicated that the nursing home had misled the family, claiming to have all necessary facilities for a safe delivery. Based on this false assurance, Roji Nayak, who was in labor, was admitted on May 11.

"After four hours of labor, the delivery was conducted by the accused without any qualified doctor present. The newborn was pronounced dead shortly after birth, and Roji herself succumbed to complications while being transported to MKCG Medical College and Hospital," a police officer reported.
